* The 13th annual Sag Hollow Invitational Golf Tournament was held over the weekend in Booneville and the weather forecast of rain and flash floods caused a few players who had signed up to cancel but in the end there was only a few sprinkles of rain. Over 70 golfers were expected but after the cancellations 50 golfers participated. It was still a great tournament, with five flights battling for a first place prize of $500 and second place of $250. The flights were determined after the first day's scores and there were approximately 10 golfers to each flight.
The championship flight was won by Zach Norris of McKee. Norris, currently a golfer for the University of Kentucky, scored a 70-67 (137). His -7 was one better than local golfer Randy Osborne, who shot a 70-68 (138). Another club member, Eric Mason, was third with a 68-75 (143). Fourth place was claimed by Matt Gann of Pineville with a 146 score. Gann won in a scorecard playoff over Trey Bowling of Manchester. The recent rains had softened the course and had it playing extremely long for the championship golfers, who played from the back tees at close to 7,000 yards. But long bomber Norris was hitting his drives well over 300 yards and generally had less yardage to the pins than the others which paid off with good shots into the greens and led to five birdies and an eagle on Sunday, the second and final day of the tournament.
The first flight was won by Tad Barton of London, who scored a 144 two day total score. Second place was won by Deron Sizemore of Manchester with a 145. Tanner Morgan of McKee was third with a 156 and Kyle Bobrowski of Booneville was fourth with a 157.
The second flight was won by Mark Keith of Harlan with a total score of 158. He won in a playoff against Brett Widner of Harlan, who also scored 158 and claimed second place. Joe Carroll, also from Harlan, was third with a 162. Fourth place was won by Shawn Barton of London with a 164.
The third flight was won by Tracy Noble of Campton with a 166 score. Finishing second was Mason Short of Irvine with a 170. Third place was won by Trevor Sizemore of Manchester with a 171 after winning a scorecard playoff over Bobby Kirby of Irvine, who finished fourth.
The fourth flight was won by Chris Lunsford of Lexington after he carded a 180 score. Jim Bowling of Manchester came in second with a 182 score. Third place was claimed by Delbert Brown of Stanton with an 184 and fourth was won by Chunk Green of Booneville who shot a 185.
* After Saturday's first round was completed a delicious dinner was provided by the ladies of the club and received much praise from the crowd. Some even took pictures of the dinner spread to take back home to show others that didn't come to the tournament what they missed. Also a big thanks to Booneville Shopwise for providing the drinks for the dinner. And another huge thanks to Randy Osborne, Rodney Trosper, Marvin Bennett, Greg Kemper, Eric Mason, Chunk Green, Tony Burch, and Michaela Reynolds for helping get the course ready or working in the clubhouse.
* Sag Hollow Golf Club is slowly emerging from winter and is welcoming early spring conditions. The warm days have brought out many golfers to the course. Several days have been very crowded with members and guests working to get their games back in form. This year marks the thirteenth year since opening in 2007 and as always Sag Hollow will continue to have a season of events from scrambles for fund raisers to the annual June invitational tournament. There's also the occasional night glow-ball scrambles, the Tuesday night league play for members and the Thursday skins game for members and the public. Also in July and August Sag Hollow will host a Ryder Cup type match-play tournament against two other area clubs, Beechfork Golf Club from Clay City and Estill County Golf Club from Irvine. In addition, Sag Hollow will host the 14th region All A Classic high school golf tournament in the fall.
* The season has already kicked off with the weekly league competition and skins play. Robert Smith won the league for April 2 and Matt Vickers won it for April 9. There's a new system for the league competition this year based on a point system and using a handicap number. The point system is as follows: a double eagle (extremely rare to get) is worth 10 points, eagle is 6 points, birdie 4 points, par 2 points, , bogey 1 point and double bogey or worse 0 points. Each golfer will be assigned a handicap number. For instance, my handicap number is 13. If I score 15 points my score is +2. Unlike golf that you see on TV where a minus symbol before your score is what is desired, in this format of scoring a plus sign (+) is good. Smith won April 2 with a +3 score. Vickers won April 9 with a +1.The winners of the team portion of the April 2 and 9 league competition were Robert Smith and Jeff Voyles and Eric Mason won the closest to the pin prize.Thursday's skins games played on April 4 had two winners, Brad Mullins and Adam Sowder. Jeff Voyles won closest to the pin. The skins game on April 11 had one winner, Randy Osborne's birdie on the par 3 number 6 hole held up and he took home all the winnings. Eric Mason won closest to the pin on number 3.
* Congratulations to Derek Begley on winning two clubhouse basketball contest, and $445, during the recent NCAA tournament. He drew Virginia out of the hat for a $5 entry contest and also drew Virginia in a $10 contest. Also winning money in the two contests as runner-up or drawing a team that made the Final Four were Greg Kemper, Bart Patton, Robin Sheriff, Darrin Gay, Jason Smith and Charlie Turner.

* Tuesday's league play had 18 golfers in action and when the round ended Randy Osborne was the winner. The club has adopted a variety of the Stableford scoring method for the league which uses a point system which rewards the golfer points based on their score on each hole. An eagle is worth 6 points, a birdie worth 4, a par is 2 points, a bogey is 1, and a double bogey or worse is 0 points. Randy amassed 31 points in the 9 hole round, a great round of golf which included 5 birdies and an eagle along with 2 pars and a bogey. Randy's handicap number for the Stableford is 24 which meant his score for the round was +7. Randy also won half of the team portion of the league when he paired up with Jimmie Herald to score a combined +9. Jeff Voyles won closest to the pin on the 3rd hole.
* Thursday's skins game had one winner, Derek Begley on hole number 1. His birdie was the only one of the 18 golfers participating that held up and wasn't tied. Ernie Whisman won the closest to the pin on hole 3.
* Eight year old Nathan Chapman of Jackson, son of Jonathan Chapman and grandson of John Paul Chapman, finished 3rd in the Williamsburg, Va. Classic golf tournament last week. * Sag Hollow was very busy through the weekend with golfers enjoying the beautiful spring conditions. Over 60 golfers played Saturday and led to a shortage of rental carts by early afternoon. Many of the visitors to Sag Hollow say they learn about the course from others that have already played the 9 hole layout and encourage them to play it, too. Others say they surf the internet for golf courses in the area and see the Sag Hollow website information. Some visitors are vacationers at the Red River Gorge and Natural Bridge State Park and are looking for activities to go along with their hiking, rock climbing and camping. Whatever reason they visit our course Sag Hollow welcomes everyone! For a great day of fun and relaxation visit Sag Hollow Golf Club!
* Derek Begley and Lonzo Moore tied for the best score in Tuesday's league play. The league now uses a form of the PGA's Stableford Scoring System where an eagle is worth 6 points, a birdie is 4 points, a par is 2 points, a bogey is 1 point and a double bogey or worse is 0 points. In this system, which utilizes a handicap system, Begley and Moore shot well enough to have 0 points while the rest of the field of 18 golfers were all minus points. Moore also was part of the winning two man team of the league when he partnered with Jeff Sandlin to score a combined -1 points. Closest to the pin on number 3 was won by Eric Mason.
* Eighteen golfers entered Thursday's skins game and when all were finished there were 4 players who won skins. Cody Pennington's birdie won number 1, Eric Mason's birdie held up on number 4, Matt Vickers won number 6 with a birdie and Tony Burch won number 8, also with a birdie. Ernie Whisman won the closest to the pin prize for hole number 3.

* Jacob Anderson won Tuesday's league play competition when he carded a +1 score in the Stableford system now used in league play at the course. Jacob's Stableford handicap is 18 and he scored a 19. In the Stableford system a "plus" sign is what is wanted rather than a "minus" sign seen in traditional golf scoring methods. Per each hole played the golfer earns 6 points for an eagle, 4 points for a birdie, 2 points for pars, 1 points for a bogey and 0 points for double bogeys or worse. Tim Pennington won the two-man team portion of the league when he drew the Ace card and was permitted to count his -1 score as a team score. * Thursday's skins game was cancelled due to inclement weather conditions.
* Eric Mason's team came in second in the big Derby Day scramble held at Estill County Golf Club. The team shot -13 and was beaten on the last hole by a team that chipped in a birdie. * The youngsters connected to Sag Hollow through family or membership are playing golf events around the state and surrounding states throughout the summer and are doing quite well. Three of them had competitions last week and all won first place in their category. Eelan Bobrowski-Hall, son of Joe and Brittany and grandson of Nelson and Teresa Bobrowski, won first place in the Boys 8 & Under Division of the Players Series, played at Hidden Cove Golf Course in Olive Hill, Ky. Eelan scored a 34 score in the six hole competition to easily win. Kylah and her father Chris won the Father-Child nine hole competition at Kearney Hills Golf Links. The pair shot an even par 36 to claim the title. And the third winner of an event was 8 year old Nathan Chapman of Jackson, son of Jonathan and Kendra Chapman and grandson of John Paul Chapman, who is his golf coach. Nathan competed in the Drive, Chip & Putt event at Man O'War in Lexington. The ultimate goal of this competition is to make it to the finals in Augusta, Ga, where the historic and famous Masters tournament is played. Nathan got off to a great start by winning all three categories. This event was the "local" competition. Nathan will now move on to the "sub-regional". He had his picture taken beside a sign that read "The Road To Augusta Starts Here". Congratulations to these three talented youngsters and good luck in the future play.
* Darrin Gay, member and resident of Sag Hollow, got his first ever hole-in-one June 2nd when he aced the par 3 third hole. There's been two other aces this year, Ernie Whisman got one April 18th on the sixth hole and Gary Bolt had one April 29th on the third hole. There's now been 24 hole-in-ones at Sag Hollow since the course opened for play in 2007. The odds for a golfer getting a hole-in-one is 12,500 to 1.
* Tuesday league play had a tie for the individual winner between Deron Mays and Lucas Moore. Both scored a +1 with their handicap in the Stableford Scoring System used in the league. Jacob Anderson and Lucas Moore won the team portion of the league with a +1 combined score. Lonzo Moore was the closest to the pin winner on number 3.

June 24, 2019
* The Sag Hollow area has seen quite a bit of rain over the past several weeks but Sag Hollow's maintenance crew has still managed to have the course in good playing shape, and many have taken advantage of it. Number 4 fairway is usually the soggiest but in the spring a gravel cart path was added running up the left side and has enabled the course to rope off the fairway and make it cart path only during extreme wet conditions. The rest of the course drains well enough to handle the conditions and allow for golf carts. Most days have been very busy at Sag Hollow!
* There was a three-way tie for the individual low score in Tuesday's handicapped league play, which uses a modified version of the Stableford Scoring System and is based on accumulated points per hole. Brad Mullins, Todd Parkhouse, and Lucas Moore all tied with a +3 total. The team portion of the league was won by Darrin Gay and Todd Parkhouse. Jeff Sandlin won closest to the pin $10 prize.
* Two skins were won in Thursday's skins game. Randy Osborne birdied number 3 and Matt Vickers birdied number 8. All the remaining holes were tied. Closest to the pin prize went to Cody Pennington.
* Sag Hollow's membership continues to climb with over 60 members and several cooperate sponsors. If you haven't played Sag Hollow come out and tee it up for a great day of fun. You might decide to be the next newest member. The clubhouse number is 606-593-4653.

* Gary Bowling edged out three other golfers by one point to win Tuesday's handicapped league play on the Stableford System scoring that is used for league competition. Bowling had a +4 to claim first place and collect $100 for his effort. Bowling also teamed up with Eric Mason to win the team portion of the league competition. The pair combined for a +4 and each won $50. The team pairings are determined before play starts from a deck of cards and luck of the draw, so one doesn't know who his team partner is until shortly before teeing off.The closest to the pin $10 winner on hole number 3 was Chunk Green.
* Three skins were won in Thursday's skins game. Chunk Green birdied number 1, Cody Pennington birdied number 5, and Matt Vickers birdied number 8. All other holes were tied. Each golfer won $58. Vickers also won closest to the pin on hole number 3.
* Eight year old Eelan Bobrowski-Hall, son of Joe and Brittany, won second place overall last week in Driving, Chipping & Putting competition at Paxton Park Golf Course in Paducah, Ky. Eelan was first in putting and second in driving. He now goes to Persimmon Ridge Golf Course in Louisville August 18 for the Sub-Regional Qualifier. The top two finishers will move on to the regional at Oakland Hills Golf Club in Michigan, and if successful there will compete in the finals at Augusta National in Georgia, home of the Masters Tournament.
* Every course has record holders and Sag Hollow has a few that deserve mentioning. The course scoring record from the back tees, which play 6,900 yards, is held by Zach Norris of Jackson County. He set the record July 4th, 2018 when he shot 62 (-10). His round consisted of 10 birdies and 8 pars. Zach is a freshman on the University of Kentucky's golf team and is a member of Sag Hollow. Another notable record is held by Randy Osborne. In the Tuesday nine hole league play, where everyone plays from the white tees and has a handicap number, a modified version of the Stableford Scoring System is used. An eagle is worth 6 points, a birdie worth 4 points, a par worth 2, a bogey worth 1 and double bogey and worse counts as zero. Randy has the league record at 31 total points earned by having a round of one eagle, five birdies, two pars and one bogey. That's a phenomenal total and it's going to take a superman round to surpass it. Another record holder is Tony Sizemore, who has made three hole-in-ones since Sag Hollow opened in 2007. His first was June 8, 2008 on hole number 6. The second ace was made June 4, 2011, also on hole number 6. The third was made July 15, 2014 on the 3rd hole. Robert Smith has Sag Hollow's only albatross ace, a -3 score on a hole-in-one made from the teeing area. He knocked his ball into the cup from the tee on the par 4 number 8 hole on September 21, 2013.
* Come out and play Sag Hollow, one of the nicest courses in the state. Sag Hollow is looking forward to seeing as many youths as possible become interested in a game, unlike most sports activities, that one can play and enjoy well into their elder years.
* Tim Pennington is back in great golf form after a recent hip surgery and proved it by holding off the field in Tuesday's league play with a 22 point effort on the Stableford Scoring System. Tim had a Stableford handicap this week of 17 and his 22 score was a +5, which was all he needed to collect the $100 prize. The team portion was won by Darrin Gay and Eric Mason who combined for a +4 score and each collected $50. Eric also won the closest to the pin $10 gift certificate on hole number 3.
* Thursday's skins game was cancelled due to rain.
* Updated top 12 Stableford handicap scores for the Sag Hollow weekly league play: Randy Osborne 28, Eric Mason 25, Brad Mullins 22, Robert Smith 21, Jacob Anderson 19, Cody Pennington 19, Jeff Sandlin 18, Tim Pennington 18, Jeff Voyles 17, Jimmy Dunaway 17, Roy Burton 17, Gary Bowling 17.The league competition is 9 holes and played on Tuesday's. Sag Hollow uses a modified version of the Stableford Scoring Sysytem. In the Sag Hollow league play an eagle is worth 6 points, a birdie 4 points, a par 2 points, a bogey 1 point, and double bogey or worse 0 points. Since it is a handicapped competition all golfers tee from the same distance, and in league play the "white" tees (3100 yards) are used.
July 14, 2019
* Robert Smith won Tuesday's league play with a Stableford score of 23, which gave him a +2 over his handicap of 21. Only one other golfer was able to score their handicap number out of 20 golfers participating. Sometimes the course simply plays more difficult than it does on other days. Wet conditions, wind, pin placement, are some of the factors that can make scores plummet on certain days. . Robert also won team the team portion of the league when he paired with Darrin Gay to claim the prize money. Donnie Murrell won the closest to the pin $10 gift certificate on the par 3 number 3 hole.
* Thursday's skins game was cancelled for the second consecutive week due to rain.
* Add Donnie Murrell to the list of players who have a hole-in-one at Sag Hollow. He aced the 215 yard par 3 sixth hole to earn his name on the Hole-In-One plaque that hangs on the clubhouse wall. His feat marks the 25th hole-in-one at the course since it opened in 2007. Donnie also birdied the same hole his next round, which made him -3 for the day on the same hole, an accomplishment in itself.
* Sag Hollow member Randy Osborne finished 2nd in the Berea Country Club Championship Flight this past weekend. Randy shot a 64-67 (131 total) score for a -13 on the par 72 course in the two day tournament. Matt Gann of Pineville, who also played in the Sag Hollow Invitational in June and finished 4th, won the tournament with a total score of 129 (-15). Randy also finished 2nd in Sunday's calcutta. Sag Hollow member Robert Smith also played in the tournament and finished fifth in the First Flight. Another Sag Hollow member, Brad Mullins, won the Second Flight by 4 strokes.
* A Junior Golf clinic will be held at Sag Hollow during July 24-26. Eric Mason will be the instructor, along with some of the golf club parents. * A junior golf clinic will be held at Sag Hollow this week beginning Wednesday, July 24 and running through Friday, July 26. The clinic will start each day at 9 AM and conclude at noon. Cost is $5 per day or $15 for the entire clinic, and lunch is included. Contact Eric Mason at the clubhouse at 606-593-4653 for more information.
* Another hole-in-one has been made at Sag Hollow, the 26th since the course opened in 2007. Randy Osborne aced the 140 yard number 3 hole in Tuesday's league play. It was the 5th ace of the year and we're only halfway through the season. The 2018 season had just 2 hole-in-one's the entire year but 2019 has been more generous to the Sag golfers. Hole-in-one's aren't easy to accomplish, with the odds of making one for the average golfer 12,500 to 1.
* Todd Parkhouse won Tuesday's member's league play with a total of 20 points on the Stableford Scoring System. His handicap of 14 gave him a +6 score, enough to win by 2 points. There was a tie in the team portion of the league, with Jeff Sandlin and Bart Patton teaming up to score a +6 and Todd Parkhouse and Ernie Whisman also scoring a +6. Randy Osborne had the closest to the pin prize on number 3, and as has already been mentioned in this article was as close as possible, a hole-in-one.
* Thirty golfers showed up for Thursday's skins game, the largest amount of the summer. Two skins were won, on holes 1 and 9. Both were won with birdies. It's actually a rare occurrence when either of Sag Hollow's par 5's are won in the skins game with a birdie. It usually takes an eagle on those two holes, particularly with 30 golfers competing. However, Zach Watterson's birdie on the par 5 number 9 hole held up for a win. The other win was Randy Osborne's birdie on number 1. Von Campbell won the closest to the pin prize on hole number 3.

* Cody Pennington was the lone winner in the field of 22 in Thursday's skins game. Cody chipped in a birdie on number 1 and all other holes had zero winners. Cody won $190 for his effort. The $10 gift certificate for closest to the pin on number 3 was won by Tony Burch.
